As personal injury attorneys representing individuals in New York City, we are deeply saddened to learn about the three pedestrians who lost their lives in car accidents over the past weekend.
These tragic incidents underscore the perils of careless and negligent driving and highlight the pressing need for safer streets.
The first of these heartbreaking accidents claimed the life of 73-year-old Steven Aragona, who was fatally hit while crossing North Conduit Avenue in Queens last Friday afternoon.
Known for its hazardous conditions and high speeds, Conduit Avenue witnessed 127 crashes in just a two-mile stretch last year. The 25-year-old driver involved in the incident stayed at the scene but was not charged.
Domingo Dejesus was the second victim, losing his life after being struck by a motorist on Soundview Avenue in the Bronx on Saturday night around 10:45 pm.
Similar to Conduit Avenue, Soundview Avenue has a distressing safety record, with 44 accidents reported on a one-mile stretch in 2022 alone. The driver in this incident remained at the scene and was not charged.
The name of the third victim has not been disclosed, but they were struck and killed by a motorist on Broadway in Elmhurst, Queens, just an hour after the second pedestrian was fatally hit.
Broadway is yet another perilous roadway, with 35 reported injuries in 2021 alone. As with the other cases, the driver was not charged.
As legal professionals specializing in pedestrian accident cases in New York City, we have witnessed the devastating consequences that irresponsible and negligent driving can have on victims and their families.
These recent fatalities serve as a stark reminder of the pressing need for safer streets and increased driver accountability.
It is crucial that we come together to advocate for improved infrastructure, stricter enforcement, and enhanced protection for pedestrians, cyclists, and other vulnerable road users.
By doing so, we can strive to prevent the unnecessary loss of life on our streets.
