The impact forced the Ford into a parked box truck, causing Melendez to suffer extensive head and body injuries. Despite being rushed to Lincoln Hospital, she succumbed to her injuries. The 37-year-old driver of the Ford and two female passengers, aged 22 and 23, sustained injuries but are expected to recover.
The BMW’s driver, a 23-year-old man, suffered minor injuries and remained at the scene. However, an unidentified female passenger fled and has yet to be questioned by authorities. The investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been filed.
Hit-and-Run on the Bruckner Expressway
The second fatal incident occurred early Sunday morning on the Bruckner Expressway. A 51-year-old man was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver while standing next to his Toyota Camry. Police discovered his body near exit 8 leading to Pelham Parkway at around 5:15 a.m. The victim had severe head and body trauma consistent with being hit by a vehicle. His name has not yet been released.
Authorities are actively searching for the hit-and-run driver responsible for this senseless tragedy. It remains unclear why the victim had stepped out of his vehicle.
